Laura Atkins

"The best investment I made in writing and publishing my picture book was in asking Laura to edit the manuscript." —Selu Mdlalose, Publisher, Vezani Publishing

I spent seven years working in children's editorial departments in the United States, helping to produce winners of the Coretta Scott King Award and American Library Association Notable Book selections, amongst others. I am now a freelance children's book editor and was, until August 2013, a Senior Lecturer in creative writing at the National Centre for Research in Children's Literature (NCRCL) at Roehampton University in London. I am now based in Berkeley, California, and I work with clients all over the world.

The main services I offer are:

"Laura Atkins is a superb editor! She not only has a knack for discovering the underlying flaws in a story, but is extremely helpful in creating plausible remedies to fix those flaws... I recommend Laura highly as an editor and will definitely use her services in my next writing project." —Sandra Padmanabhan, Ph.D.

I currently edit children's books for Nigerian publisher Cassava Republic Press, and have critiqued work by several people who have self-published picture books (see my blog for interviews). I have also been interviewed by Zetta Elliott on her blog, and been featured as part of the Writers Against Racism series from School Library Journal. "[Laura] has a great ear for tone and an eye for detail as well as an ability to really get under the skin of what you’re writing. Her balance of constructive criticism and intelligent encouragement are just right, and she always has her focus on the main prize — getting published. I really couldn’t recommend her services more highly." —Kirsten Wild, represented by AM Heath & Co Ltd, Authors Agents
