* I am offering a one-day writing workshop on Saturday, May 22nd. Look here for details. *
I have long been fascinated with the world of children's literature, from my own avid childhood reading to many years of experience in children's publishing and academia.
I worked for seven years in the children's publishing industry in the United States, helping to produce winners of the Coretta Scott King Award and American Library Association Notable Book selections, amongst others. I worked at Children's Book Press in San Francisco and was an editor at Lee & Low Books in New York City – both publishers of multicultural picture books. I then completed an MA in Children's Literature at Roehampton University in London, and have done postgraduate work in the area of multicultural children's publishing in the UK at the University of Newcastle. I am now a part-time lecturer at the National Centre for Research in Children's Literature (NCRCL) at Roehampton University, and have taught a variety of children's literature courses, including MA-level creative writing modules. I have extensive experience running children's literature conferences and events, which includes directing the Brighton Children's Book Festival and being a steering committee member for the Diversity Matters: Growing Markets in Children's Publishing conference, sponsored by Arts Council England.
Latest projects include editing a series of children's books for Nigerian publisher Cassava Republic, critiquing work by several people who are self-publishing picture books, and speaking at the International Research Society for Children's Literature (IRSCL) congress in Frankfurt. I have also been interviewed by Zetta Elliott on her blog, and been featured as part of the Writers Against Racism series from School Library Journal.
